NASA announced the discovery of a life form that existed on Mars millions of years ago.
Abigail Fraeman described the discovery as "completely unexpected," calling it one of the most extraordinary findings in their 12-year mission. While scientists have encountered various types of sulfur on Mars, this marks the first time they have found pure sulfur.
Fraeman explained, "Typically, sulfur combines with oxygen or other elements to form salts or similar compounds, but what we discovered here were pure sulfur fragments." Early in its mission, Curiosity uncovered chemical and mineral evidence suggesting Mars could have supported "small life forms."
Fraeman added, "With Curiosity, we have definitively found that Mars was not only once habitable but remained so for an extended period." NASA reported that the discovery occurred on the 4,208th Martian day of Curiosity's mission. The rover, which landed on Mars nearly 12 years ago, was tasked with exploring the planet's habitability.
